The hand wasn't re-attached in the "wrong" place. The man was involved in an accident which mangled his left arm. The arm required major reconstructive surgery. They amputated the hand in order to save it, but they couldn't re-attach it to the mangled arm until the reconstructive surgery was complete. The hand was attached under the arm in order to keep it alive and to allow for nerve regeneration to take place, while the surgery on the arm was underway. Once the surgery on the arm was complete, the hand was removed from under his armpit and re-attached to the now reconstructed left arm.
